About Us

I am Abhisek Sengupta, a batik artist, designer, and founder of Suri Karuangan, based in Suri, Birbhum. My journey in the world of traditional art began at an early age under the guidance of my mother’s sister, who introduced me to the intricate techniques of batik.

To strengthen my skills and knowledge, I pursued formal training at Silpa Sadana, Visva Bharati University, where I completed a certificate course in Batik from 2011 to 2013. This period played a crucial role in shaping my artistic foundation and deepening my understanding of traditional craft.

After completing my training, I established my own natural dye batik unit, Karuangan, and developed my brand Suri Karuangan. Through this platform, I specialize in natural dye batik dress materials, Indo-western garments, traditional Santiniketan-style batik, and batik paintings. My work reflects a fusion of heritage techniques and contemporary design.

I am also a founder member of the handicraft-based NGO Birbhum Artisani, where I have been actively involved since 2013. My work with the organization focuses on the diversification and development of lacquer craft products, supporting local artisans and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

In addition to batik and lacquer craft, I also practice Sora painting, exploring different forms of traditional Indian art.

My vision is to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Bengal while embracing innovation and sustainability in every creation.
